Salina, Kansas is a small town in Gregg County, Kansas, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Salina is located on the Salina River and has a full-time school system that serves 7th through 12th grades. The town was founded in 1881 by two brothers, John and George Hinshaw. Salina was incorporated as a village in 1907. The townsite of present-day Salina was first patented by George Hinshaw on November 15, 1881. At the time it included most of present day Gregg County including what is now eastern Wichita County as well as much of eastern Kiowa County including what is now Topeka County and parts of southern Hutchinson County today. The patentees were brothers John and George Hinshaw who named their new community for their father Joseph Hinshaw (1784-1851), one of three sons born to farmer Isaac Hinshaw (1772-1833) and his wife Sarah Ann (Nelson) Hecker (1776-1848). The first post office opened in 1883 in present day Salina; however, mail service from Topeka until 1886 was conducted via wagon across the river to Wichita City because no boat existed at that time to reach Greggsburg Landing on the Missouri River west of Topeka.
