Salina, Kansas is a city in Saline County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Salina was made by pioneers named Griggs and Hildebrandt on July 20, 1854. The town site was located on the east side of present-day Salina between Cedar and Osage rivers. The first post office in Salina was established on December 15, 1854. On January 24, 1865, it was renamed to honor General Ulysses S. Grant who had fought for the Union during the American Civil War and received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Fort Donelson in April 1865. After World War I ended in 1918, many salinaans left their homes and went into exile or retirement in western Canada or Mexico City due to political changes that occurred during that time period as well as economic hard times brought about by war-time recession combined with depression following World War I. In 1934 a group of local businessmen formed an organization calledthe "Saline Valley Citizens' Club" to promote development within the city limits instead of just beyond them which would have resulted in less public land available for development within city limits; this decision led to downtown being developed as one large shopping district while other parts of town were left undeveloped until after Salina's incorporation as a city in 1959.
