It is part of the Wichita-Hutchinson metropolitan area and is the county seat of Saline County. Salina's history dates back to 1866 when it was called "Townsite No. 1" on the east side of what is now Salina Township on the Saline River. The original settler were brothers Amos and John Nichols who arrived from Illinois in 1866 and founded Nichols Landing on the current site of downtown Salina which they named for Amos' father, Nicholas Nichols Sr., a landowner in Fayette County. In 1872, Townsite No. 1 became part of present-day Salina after it was annexed by that city as part of a general compact between Wichita and Hutchinson Counties approved by the territorial legislature on December 4, 1870 under pressure from settlers near Topeka who wanted their own county seat. In 1893, when Wichita city limits were extended westward to include all but one mile (1 km) of present-day downtown Wichita, Businessman & Mayor George Armstrong donated land to provide an appropriate courthouse complex including a jail and jailer's office as well as other necessary public buildings within City Limits boundaries; these properties are now known collectively as Armstrong Parkette #2 following their donation by George Armstrong to Wichita in 1898 during his first term as Mayor consequent upon his election victory that year over incumbent William McKinley! The 20th century witnessed many changes for Salina with declining manufacturing jobs leading to dissatisfaction among some residents with reduced services such as police protection; however citizens rose up against this trend through organized protests culminating with a peaceful sit-in at City Hall beginning on October 5, 1984 which ended when police moved into force; subsequent arrests occurred during nonviolent civil disobedience demonstrations throughout November1984 until finally ending four days later with dispersal order given by then Mayor Harry Blackmun!. One protestor died while incarcerated despite offers by local authorities for early release resulting in national attention!
