In 1873-1874 two salinas brothers named George Armstrong and Hiram Weir set up shop near Old Town Square sellinggunsandammunitiondirecttothepublicforafee.(This business venture failed however) In 1875-1876 Amos Norden established a store at Fourth Street & Haskell Avenue sellingguns(this store also failed) In 1886-1887 Oliver Wetherbee organized a meeting to discuss ways of securing firearms against theft or vandalism etc.. At this meeting several members including Wetherbee purchased pistols from civilian dealers and stored them at their home until they could be acquired back by the rightful owners On December 12th 1888 Samuel Colt organized his company "Samuel Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company" with twelve employees to produce revolvers (this company eventually became " Colt Inc.") On January 1st 1889 an order came into Samuel Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company seeking 660 revolvers (these revolvers were serial numbered starting with 6001) these orders were filled within two weeks . On March 30th 1889 Samuel Colt received notification from Philadelphia that one thousand six hundred thirty revolvers had been delivered Theresepresentssentbackontothemanufacturerwithcompletionoforder . The revolver production process resumed at once and within two months more than one thousand five hundred revolvers had been produced . In 1907, Salina became a city with its own government and within 5 years it had outgrown its original boundaries so it annexed neighboring towns such as Centerville (which sits today outside of town) and Hays (which lies today east of town). Today all 3 towns are part of one municipality known as Osborne County. One significant event that took place during Salina's early days was World War I which saw much violence between the warring factions in Central Europe which also included Salina itself. Many homes were destroyed or damaged during this time as well as many people being killed or injured due to the fighting taking place around them. As things calmed down following World War I there was an increase in business activity thanks largely to post-war Reconstruction followed by technological advances which allowed for more efficient production methods on larger scale than ever before resulting in increased profitability for businesses throughout Osborne County despite some decline beginning around 1957 when oil discoveries began making local production unprofitable again
