Salina, Kansas is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. Salina was incorporated on November 3, 1905. It is part of the Topeka–Amarillo, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Salina was George Aitken who arrived in 1854 and built a cabin on the new Township line from Emporia to Shawnee City. He had two wives and six children. His brother John Aitken followed him to Salina in 1861 and began building a log store known as Aitken's Store which still stands today inside of the old Post Office Square downtown. In 1865 Andrew Dickson moved his family from Topeka to Shawnee County where he founded Dickson's Mills (now called Dicksonville). Andrew's wife Fannie Dickson married Samuel Prentice who ran the mill until it burned down in 1872. In 1865 also Jacob Bean established a post office at present day Salina with five mail coaches each carrying three gallons of postage per trip between Topeka and Shawnee City/Salina - this service continued until 1907 when it was replaced by the current US Postal Service Rail Mail system which became operational on September 15th, 1897. In 1875 James Covington set up a tannery near present day Covington Springs before moving his operation to what is now Fort Riley in 1870 where he operated an artillery factory making cannonballs for use against Indians during the Indian Wars of the 1860s-1870s In 1887 Wm J Henson opened up a grocery store at present day east side of Main Street called "The node" which continued to be open until it closed its doors for good in 1984 after being attacked by vandals several times over the years . Property owner Milton Stroud donated all four buildings within sight of The node including an old flour Mill (now used as apartments) that sat vacant for many years before finally being torn down in 2006 . In 1915 Hannibal Hodge started marketing Territorial beer out of his home on First Street . At first he only sold beer but later developed into what is now Wichita State University’s School Of Beer Marketing & Brewing Technology.. Today Hannibal Hodge Elementary School continues along First Street adjacent to his house where students learn about beer sales history while playing tag or other games around his property
