Salina, Kansas is a small town in east-central Kansas that was founded in 1873. The town was named for General James Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War. Salina first became a village in 1881 and then a town in 1907. The current population of Salina was 3,898 as of the 2010 census. The history of Salina began with three pioneers who journeyed west from Illinois to find new land to settle. One pioneer, Chas. Hodge, landed on what is now the southeast side of downtown Salina on July 9th, 1847. Two other men—George Witherspoon and De Witt Burgess—landed on the same day but far away from downtown on opposite sides of the Missouri River. In early 1853, George Witherspoon surveyed a plat for an Indian trading post at present-day Wichita Falls (now Wichita) County seat (the site of Fort Concho). However, he never built the post because he died before anyone could come through and claim it. Later that year, Chas Hodge returned home from his trip to find that his brother David had married his sister Jane Addison Hodge and moved back east to live with her parents near St Louis (now St Joseph). When David found out about his sister's marriage and their move back east he decided to stay in Missouri instead of moving back east himself so he could be with Jane Addison again. In 1854, John Ladd bought some land south of present-day Salina from David Hodge for $5 per acre ($120 total). On October 7th 1860 during a time period when slavery was legal in Kansas but not yet abolished by state law, four people walked into town meeting room located at First National Bank building located at 400 Main Street to demand passage of a bill allowing slavery withinKansas without its own state constitution defining it as such. The measure passed 4-1 with only one man – future United States Senator Abraham Lincoln – dissenting due to personal beliefs about abolitionism at that time which would later become known as the Lincoln Principle or Lincolnianism. The first store opened up in what is now northeast corner lot #2 off Main Street between South Water Lane and North Water Lane around 1870s according to local history books written by locals over 50 years ago including Mrs Ethel Gossage who grew up right across street from where today’s NE Corner Lot 2 stands! This store operated under various names until it went full name “Salina Hardware” circa 1905 & closed sometime after World War I because there wasn’t much business here anymore due mainly to farmers growing corn & soybeans etc.—which allowed prices for goods here lower than those closer away! Today this location still holds many memories thanks mostly elderly residents who can tell you all about it (& even take pictures!) Thank you Mrs Gossage! JB In 1909 voters approved adding 100 acres northwesterly onto what is now Northeast Corner Lot 2 lots 1st & 2nd Streets NW [later renamed SALINA hardware] giving rise today’s businesses including: NE CornerLot 2 LLC; SOUTHWesterly REAL ESTATE CO., LTD.; & SEATTLE COUNTY HEIGHTS REAL ESTATE CO., LTD.. This area also included what is now occupied by US Post Office Building which once served as SALINA PUBLIC SCHOOLS buildings complex used until 1983 when they were razed along with several other buildings following tornado damage wrecks occuring there during THAT YEAR!!! Soo…a complete overview has NEVER been taken care OF like we should have been given ample warning Back THEN!!! Nowadays we are left Archaeological field dealing WITH all sorts OF STORMS every year causing tremendousdamage….awful!!!!!!JB
