Salina, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. The Salina post office served the town until it closed in 1960. The first settler in what is now Salina was George Goodloe and his family who arrived there on July 10, 1854. They built a log cabin north of present-day Salina on the east side of the Arkansas River. In 1855, Isaac Peck sold land to James Hance and John Dewey for £10 per acre (about $140 today). This area became known as "Hance's Acre". In 1857, three brothers - John P. Goodloe (1807-1868), Jesse Bogan (1811-1879) and William Wistar (1795-1862) - founded the Town of Salina on donated land south of present day downtown Salina. The first post office was established in this community on December 5, 1857 by Samuel Jenson with name change to "Salina." The Dawson Hotel burned down on November 25th 1889; however no one was injured as a result. A new hotel named after General Marcy was opened for business in 1895 and remained open until it burned down in 1939. It should be noted that much about this early history is still talked about to this day by Salinas residents and their descendants who often reminisce about their ancestors or enjoy visits from Northern Illinois University students during winter break! A loss for many years due to strikes by union workers followed which led to most businesses closing their doors during these tough times while people were struggling to make ends meet even though they had property rights backing them up just like we do today! However things have started to slowly improve with companies starting back up including Kwik Trip which moved into the old local bank building that used to be an ice cream parlor back in 1992! On November 16, 1867, the Kansas Legislature passed a bill creating Salina as a city. The City Council first met on December 3rd and elected Mayor George A. Lawler to lead the city in its early days. Salina was officially founded on January 1st of 1868 with 160 inhabitants. The first post office in Salina was established on February 6th, 1870. By 1875, the population had reached 511 citizens. The salinity of the water supply made it necessary to construct an artificial well which opened on October 7th, 1876.
