Salina, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Ardmore Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salina is located on the southern bank of the Arkansas River and along its eastern border with Atchison County. The city's name comes from Spanish Settlement of San Salvador and means "safe place." The first European to set foot in what is now Salina was José de Urrea in 1819 while exploring the area for potential new fur trading posts on behalf of Manuel Arzobispo de Mérida. In 1821 Urrea named it after his friend Agustín de Salinas, Viceroy of New Spain at that time. A post office was established at Salina in 1824, and remained open until 1871 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail traffic. The first school in what is now Salina was erected in1827 by local farmer John Cramer as a one-room log cabin built using materials brought over from Wichita Falls by wagon train driver Michael Ladd. The first teacher taught classes there before moving to Topeka to become the first female teacher in Topeka public schools in 1859. A post office called "Salinas" was established at this location on July 6, 1861, under Act 227 of 1862; it continued operating until December 31, 1865 due to lack of mail traffic between Topeka and Shawnee City (then spelled “Topeka”). In 1863 Frémont surveyed much of present-day Shawnee County including parts of present-day Salina township; he thought then that topographers would like this area because its flat geography allowed easy transportation by stagecoach across alluvial plains eastward into OKLAHOMA Territory (present day Kansas). After Frémont's survey came development around here with claims being made for land north, east and south as far as Pawnee Creek where today's buildings are located; but no action ever took place because finding title would have required more than just an appraisal from some friendly gentleman! In 1870 James Fenton opened a gristmill on Spring Creek which became known as Fenton & Co.; later renamed First National Bank Corporation following their purchase by First National Corporation (FNB) also headquartered here; First National Banks still operate within downtown today although their building has been extensively remodeled several times during their history including most recently inside what used to be their original entrance drive – once again making them One Stop Shop for All Your Financial needs! . By 1880 eighty percent or more citizens were farmers while only 5% or so were employed outside the farm industry; an even smaller percentage worked within either business or government services such as schools or health care systems It wasn't until 1907 when Incorporated Salina Municipal Schools District No1 finally got started offering educational services primarily through private schools that people began truly taking notice about our community other than just passing through stopping off en route to get milk or eggs at Pecan Mills etc….. That same year Stonington Petroleum Company moved production operations from Dodge City upriver approximately 9 miles creating some pretty big waves both upstream and downstream…….. Finally with World War I raging things really picked up with businesses expanding quickly such that we had three Merchants Jardines Drug StoreYep folks another one added during my time here too….. Just imagine if instead we only talked about food………………… darn you teachers unions!!!!!!!!!!” It wasn't until 1957 when Wichita State University moved into current day Old Main Building that students actually started attending classes in what is now known as “Salina High School” though facilities were already extant on campus since 1889 thanks to funding provided by Hitchcock School Board member Drury Hildebrandt who donated land adjacent to Wichita State University then known as Eastern High School which later became Eisenhower Middle School before becoming EisenhowerHighSchool back again during this era). With enrollment increasing rapidly through outschools expansions occurred not only onto campus but also beyond providing additionalBuildings such as Administration Building annex/office complex housing salinas library system gymnasium Athletic Fieldhouse East Gym &Classroom addition also housing library system cafeteria Open Air Learning Pavilion multipurpose room currently used for various events including band rehearsals winter carnival dances summer concerts theatre performances art exhibits…. In 1870–71, two men from Topeka – Jerald Bogue and Hiram Pye – surveyed and platified land that would become the Town of Salina; they named it after General George Armstrong Custer because he had helped lead Native American forces against Mexico during the Mexican-American War years earlier. When railroads were extended through central Kansas following the construction of Interstate 35 in 1967 and I-80 bypassing Wichita in 1990, parts of rural eastern Benton County switched from crop production to more urban areas such as Wichita Falls and Shawnee Mission before reaching their current borders within cattle country east of Topeka along US 281/US 362 highway near Olathe Highway 9/10 near Rock Valley Highway 7/8 just outside Ofallon Township boundaries
