Salina is one of the most significant towns in Geary County and it has a long history as a center for trade and commerce. The first post office in Salina was established on December 15, 1875. The town was named after the Salinas River which flows through it. When the railroad arrived in 1870, businessmen from nearby Wichita began to invest money in what would become the biggest mining boomtown in America. By 1881, Salina had establishment of banks and businesses including flour mills, livery stable, saddlery shop and several hotels. In 1886-87 wagon trains carrying goods up to Wichita were stopped by Indians on the way to Santa Fe Railroad station; this event helped spur development of railroads into central Geary County. Salina quickly became an important commercial center with its own newspaper (the "Salina Daily Review"), two banks (the First National Bank and the Citizens National Bank), four hotels (the Bell Hotel & Gilded Age Hotel etc.), two grain elevators (the John Ahern grain elevator and the Wm Hickey grain elevator), three grocery stores (Plymouth Market Place/Grocery store #1 and Empire Grocery & Hardware #2), seven garage spaces plus an attached machine shop/steel works occupied by local manufacturing companies such as Nailor's Sons Mfg., Paintshop Co., Ford Carriage Works etc.; along with dairy operations belonging to Mrs. Clements Dairy Company (#4) and Mrs. Dodge's Creamery Company (#5). The town also boasted a schoolhouse - known as Peoria School - that housed grades 1-12 from 1875 until 1955 when it burned down; however little remains today of any of its original buildings other than foundation stones marking out its location today on First Street between Second Avenue northward towards downtown Wichita
