The first postmaster was J W Gattuso (1875-1958). A cotton gin was built by Alfred Sennett in 1909; it became known as "The Ginni" or "Sennett's Cotton Gin." Today Prairie has two churches: First Presbyterian Church and Methodist Episcopal Church both located on Main Street between Seventh Avenue North and Eighth Avenue North which date back to 1892 when they replaced an old Baptist church that burned down several years earlier due to lack of funds to rebuild it. In 1970, Interstate 65 bypassed downtown Wichita as it passed through Kansas City across the Missouri River into Oklahoma Territory concurrent with I-40 leading southward out of downtown Wichita into what would become Cottonwood Heights within Oklahoma City limits just before Exit 45 on I-65 outside Tulsa proper whereupon exit number increased again became Exit 46 continuing northeast following Atchison County Road Erael Slaton Boulevard passing under I-35W entering Oklahoma City proper past CenturyLink Field before exiting onto Grady Memorial Drive finally reaching its terminus approximately 2 miles north west of downtown Tulsa along Business Loop 4222

Prairie, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the Missouri River. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Prairie was founded in 1851 by Luther Vandross and others wagon drivers who followed the Santa Fe Trail from Independence, Missouri to Kansas City. The town grew steadily during the 19th century as families moved into what was then an open prairie land that stretched from Topeka to Wichita and eastward to Dodge City and Beloit. By 1900, Prairie had a post office, school system, and railroad station. During World War I, Prairie became a training ground for military officers because of its location on the railway line connecting Wichita with Chicago. In 1933 it merged with nearby Hutchinson to form Prairie-Hutchinson Township. The history of Prairie begins with Luther Vandross who drove wagons westward along the Santa Fe Trail in search of new land to settle after his family left Independence in 1851. After reaching Topeka on November 3rd 1851 he began building a ranch house which would become known as "The Ranch" or "Vandross'. He also began buying more acreage around his home until he had enough property for himself and 10 others including two children under age 10 (Wanda & Clyde). In March 1852 local residents met at The Ranch to discuss forming a town site due to lack of suitable land east of Wichita where settlers could build their homes without fear of being taken advantage of by Indian raiders or being encroached upon by other farmers looking for additional farmland near their homes. Eventually they decided that they wanted their own town so they organized themselves into committees which started selling Lots No 2 and 3 on April 12th 1852 for $5 each (the lots were just below Main Street). Classes were held in July/August1852 when all inhabitants were required to attend one session although only 5 people attended because many other businesses closed due to drought conditions; these classes taught hitching up horses and howto farm using primitive tools such as hoes etcetera while living off salvaged foodstuffs such as meat from animals killed during plagues or during warfare etcetera A store was built soon afterwards but it failed due to low demand from buyers since there wasn't any good farming soil available close by so farmers turned instead towards cattle raising which became an important part of prairie life back then In October 1853 another meeting was held at The Ranch about forming schools but again no decisions were made about setting up schools so parents sent their children off into neighboring townships where schooling did begin shortly thereafter Prairie's first schoolhouse was built near present day Elmira Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street while Wanda Vandross served as teacher On December 5th 1853 Rev Amos White arrived from Topeka preaching Christianity based on his visit there three days prior where he saw young women spinning yarn outside while menfolk played cards inside ; White determined that this place needed gospel preaching so he preached here beginning January 15th 1850 until February 6th 1850 when he finally departed for Topeka . After White left Prairie quickly formed itself into its own church with Reverend C R Moody officiating services beginning February 17th 1850 until May 8th 1850 when Reverend John McNaught officiated . From early morning till late night services were conducted outdoors under full moonlight with skilful acrobatics performance called 'Gospel Grammar' which helped improve vocal skills among students since reading texts those days consisted mainly of storiesbook type text books rather than technical mathematics etcetera On October 20 th 1850 Mr A H Shannon offered 3 acres adjoining The Ranch lot #2 (now 4TH STREET)for use as a school grounds but this offer was rejected by congregationdue largely because most citizens felt it would be difficult enough trying provide education withoutalso having access too valuable real estate like lots 2 thru 5 mentioned earlier . Consequently , district #2 continued functioning informally as "School House Corner" until May 24 th 1870 In addition some buildings erected include: churches - First Presbyterian Church (later renamed United Reformed), Second Presbyterian Church (later renamed Trinity Episcopal), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church - now First Baptist Church South ( later renamed First United Methodist Chapel)), Third Presbyterian Church (later renamed Central United Methodist Chapel), African American Baptist Churches - All Souls Missionary Baptist church now Highland Park BaptistChurch south sideMainStreetAllisons Road circa 1895 ), Post Office Building - current structure used as Stuarts Place Apartments., mayor's chambers - currently used garage attached structures original structures are still extant
Prairie was first settled by the Cheyenne in the late 18th century. The area now known as Prairie was part of the Shawnee Nation until 1821, when Kansas Territory was organized. In 1846, at the end of the Mexican-American War, Texas ceded Rancho San Carlos to Mexico in return for a partial payment of $10 million. The United States acquired this land from Mexico in 1848 and it became part of Nebraska Territory.
