McClure built the first store in Prairie and named it after his home state of Kansas: "Prairie City". In 1865, Wm. Hickey laid out a road to Prairie from Fort Dodge through present-day Wichita; this road became known as Broadway Street. By 1870, ten stores were open in Prairie with an total population of 100 residents; by 1880 this number had grown to twenty-one stores with 1,200 residents. In 1916, President William Howard Taft announced that all new national monuments would contain at least one mountain peak or waterfall within their boundaries; Mount Rushmore was included in this proclamation and so when cattle drives went westward into Oklahoma in 1916–17 seeking access to the newly acquired land east of Tulsa – much of which lay within Sedgwick County – they passed through Prairie on their way to check out the potential sites for mountaintop waterfalls within those boundaries. At that time there were no such places within Prairie's borders and so the town's namesakeMount Scott National Monument was created instead (it still contains 6500 acres [2 700 hectares] of federal land).
