Prairie is a town in Geary County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. The name "Prairie" was given to the town by General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War. The first post office in Prairie was established in 1868. It was renamed Geary in 1871 after Major General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the American Civil War. The first store opened in Prairie on July 12, 1870 by Wm. Powers and his brother-in-law, John Fenton. On October 26 of that year, the first school opened for students grades one through four at what is now Stickney Elementary School. A second school building also served as a Courthouse from 1886 to 1888 when it burned down. In 1906, an addition were added to Stickney Elementary School which included a gymnasium and band room along with new classrooms and administration offices. In 1907, two more schools were built: Ponderosa Middle School (now Southside Middle School) and Northside High School (). These buildings became known as Blockbuster Schools because they served many different functions including public schools until 1978 when they were demolished to make way for a new high school campus which includes football and basketball stadiums as well as basketball courts for use by Prairie High School athletes
