Prairie, Kansas is a small town in Cheyenne County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Prairie is located northeast of Topeka on the east side of the Arkansas River. The first settlers in Prairie were three families who arrived in 1854 from Illinois: the Hargrave family, the Ladd family and John A. Satterlee. They decided to stay in what is now Cheyenne County and built their first log home around 1855. The area that would become Prairie was part of Wichita County at that time. In 1860, Wm Hargrave bought land north of Topeka and started developing it into a town called Prairie Village. He named his townsite after one of his daughters, Caroline (Prairie). In 1865-1868, James Bowers established a post office in Prairie Village and served as its first Postmaster General until he resigned due to ill health in 1871. In 1870, Jno Hayward organized the First Territorial Legislature for Kansas Territory and by Act No. 3 signed on May 6 created Dakota County with a boundary running northwest to south on Missouri River then southeast to southwest on Red Cedar Creek before eventually terminating at Washakie Creek near Topeka; this included all present-day Cheyenne County including most of present-day Prairie Village. On December 15th same year Hayward submitted an application for statehood to Ulysses S Grant which was granted on January 12th 1876 without any debates or amendment necessary as both houses had already approved annexation by Dodge City (now Wichita) through concurrent resolution dated November 14th 1865 vote tallying 101-0 senate with 2 abstentions; this became effective February 14th when Dakota Territory became official with territorial legislature duly elected following fraudulent election held on October 10th 1875 by commissioners appointed by governor under authority given by act September 8th 1792 providing for appointment only members nominated by senatorial majority instead of common people thus fraudulently gaining power over entire territory resulting in growing tension between county officials & newly empowered Indian tribal leaders culminating in open violence July 5th 1880 when militants led by G O P T E N C E plunder& burned buildings wagons supplies food grain $10M gold nuggets from Cache Valley mining camps during period known as “raid” resulting in death & destruction OF $100M annual crop production withinCoweta National Forest surrounding prairies thereby facilitating rapid settlement & conversion of many buffalo range into open fields housing nearly 20K residents today
