The discovery of oil in 1901 brought about a period of growth for Prairie; during this time, oil production became one of the town's primary sources of income. However, with more people living near oil rigs and pipelines, water shortages began to crop up throughout many parts of Prairie during this time period; eventually these problems led to annexation by Shawnee County in 1907 due to revenue issues caused by increased agricultural use within Shawnee county's limits (the rest of Prairie remained municipally unincorporated). In 1911, when Wichita annexed all but 2 square miles (5 km²)of prairie extending into Eldorado County (partly due to feuding between two families who were adjacent landowners), it became clear that much larger areas needed To be annexed if Wichita wanted any say over future development within its borders - which ultimately happened with Archer City annexing most remaining prairies westward towards Sedgwick County some years later).
