Prairie, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Edina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Prairie is located on the south shore of Lake Wichita and includes the communities of Deming, Haskell, and Jewell. Prairie began as an agricultural community in 1887 when Major James Witherspoon founded the townsite of Prairie on land that he had acquired from John Charles Frémont for $1 per acre (0.50 km²). Witherspoon named his new community after General George Smeaton who had helped him purchase the land from Frémont. settler J.B. Hennessey established a post office in Prairie in 1890 and renamed it Cherokee City after his Cherokee Nation home near Muskogee, Oklahoma which he had recently purchased from US Army Colonel George Armstrong Custer for $10 per acre (3 ha; 0.81 km²). In 1893, another early settler, J M Goodloe arrived with his family from Maryland and erected a log cabin north of present-day Haskell on what would later be called Goodloe Street. Goodloe became one of Prairie's most prominent citizens and served as its first mayor from 1895 to 1897 and as postmaster until 1899 when he moved to Hutchinson to become Mayor there also until 1903 when he left to become Deputy Marshal for Shawnee County during Governor Prentice Milliken's tenure in office (1903-1909). In 1907 Goodloe donated additional land to form what would become present-day Deming Township which included all or part of present-day Haskell and Jewell townsites east thereof including much of today's Haskell Street Corridor Historic District built around 1909 by attorney Julius Krugman following instructions given to him by then-Governor Charles Evans Hughes MD about developing "a town within a town" patterned after Wichita’s Montrose district where home values were high enough so that one could affordably live without being too close tocommercial districts or city limits]. The area now bounded by Elmwood Drive on the east side ofDeming Creek Valley westward along Beaver Road past Haskell Street eastward forming Park Rapids before turning southeast past current day Elkader Avenue into Park Rapids again becoming Park Rapids Boulevard continuing southwesterly through today's residential areas bordering Clearwater River valley into Hutchinson proper]]. Krugman also developed what is now downtown Topeka with many government buildings including Topeka State Capitol building Streets leading northwest/southeast across Central Avenue between First National Bank Building (now Grand Army Plaza) on West Main street across Central Avenue between Second National Bank Building (now Best Buy plaza) on South Main street then northeast onto 20th Street crossing Central Avenue at Federal Reserve headquarters before turning southwest onto 21st Street continuing northeast into Central Avenue shopping mall complex now known as CenturyLink Field current site once occupied by Excelsior Hotel prior to their move out following World War I From 1915 until 1959 suburban development was limited primarily to those living within two miles (3 km) of Topeka Regional Airport with only 5% or so annexed into Topeka proper]]. This changed with the outbreak World War II when much farmland adjacent both airport property—including much now within Deming Township—and central business districts such as Wichita were requisitioned for use by military purposes resulting in an unprecedented wave of subdivisions throughout southern Shawnee County []]. Most notably this was true for nearby Greenwood Village which experienced more than doubling its population due almost exclusively to war induced migration []], while other rural communities such as Maple Hill saw similar increases []]. During this time prairie’s small school system struggled unsuccessfully against larger schools located elsewhere while residents increasingly bought cars instead of walking or biking2]]. By 1945 just over half Ofelia residents lived outside township boundaries making it difficult even for recent arrivals like myself [aged 17 at that time]to maintain our traditional cultural practices []], although some did try也 However transportation was still quite expensive back then ]. The postwar period saw increased health care concerns resultant in numerous people moving away seeking greener pastures while others continued working but joining professional organizations ], Although agriculture remained important nearly all employees were employed full time ]]; however since 2000 some families have decided they want children born here rather than commuting back and forth across state lines 2][]). The territory included most of present-day Kansas and Nebraska. On January 15, 1907, the name change to Oklahoma when that state became a US Territory.
