In 1907-08, prairie built a dam on the creek that provided water for their residents and also irrigated their crops; this dam remains in use today as part of Prairie's irrigation system. The first post office in prairie opened in 1895; it continued operations until 1902 when it merged with Newtonville's post office. The first school in prairie was built in 1903; it operated until 1912 when it merged with Newtonville's school board.
