Prairie is a town in Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Prairie is located on the Arkansas River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first settlers in Prairie were what is now known as "The Pawnees". They came from Missouri in 1819 and camped near present day Prairie on the Arkansas River. A post office was established at Prairie in 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. The first schoolhouse west of Topeka was built by Elijah Beavers around 1827. A store and residence were built near present day Green Valley by Major John Sibley around 1830, and another store and residence were built east of Topeka about 1830-1831 by George Harker. At this time there were no public roads or schools in prairie; only footpaths traveled between settlements. In 1839 Isaac Parker opened a mercantile business at Prairie which continued until 1862 when it merged with an adjacent store to form what is today called Parker's Mercantile Company. In 1861 Jacob Pryor opened a small grocery business which continued until 1924 when it merged with Globe Grocery Company to become Pryor's Grocery Company Ltd.. In 1865 Wm Haggerty began farming land northeast of present day Prairie; this land would later be used for the construction of Wichita State University campus What became known as Pryor Township was organized name for that purpose on November 15, 1865 by LeRoy Riggs from portion of township taken from neighboring Holden Township Originally named after James Fenton Pryor who had homesteaded thereabouts some years earlier conducting his agricultural experiments Thereafter James Fenton Pryor remained living alone & sole proprietor & representative to all farmers throughout entire township throughout their whole lives He laid out 4 miles long & wide practicable road between his house & depot cornering said township line—there being no other white man within its limits Then prosaic farmer did everything himself he could think of thro’outing life term making good crops without help From then till death do us partJames Fenton Pryor remains one thousandth owner/operator thereof still perpetuating same principle
