Prairie is a town in Kansas. It is located about 25 miles west of Wichita, on the eastern edge of the Wichita Mountains. The population was 9,850 at the 2010 census, up from 8,868 at the 2000 census. Prairie was named for Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The first people to live in Prairie were Sauk and Potawatomi Indians. In 1836, General James Kansa founded what is now Wichita Falls in what is now Prairie County. He named it after his wife's home state of Iowa: "Prairie" meant "place where she had been born." In 1840, General Dodge founded an outpost called Dodge City on the Purgatory River east of present-day Wichita Falls. This became Dodge Citys second city and was one of the largest cities in America until Tulsa bought it in 1907. In 1846–47 another group of settlers came from Illinois to homestead near present-day Topeka on the Arkansas River. They name their new settlement Topeka but renamed it Dakota when they arrived there in 1849 because their homeland was Canada (theoriginalDakota Sioux Nationexisteduntil1776). When Kansas became a U.S.- Territorial Territory in 1861, Topeka reverted back to its original name: Dakota Territory or Indian Territory (later South Dakota Territory). Missourians who had settled along the Arkansas River south of Topeka also changed their names to Dakotas when they reached Indian Territory; these were later replaced by those used by settlers living north of Interstate 40 between Wichita and Council Bluffs (Iowa), such as Haileyburg Township (Nebraska) and Rapid City (South Dakota). A post office called Prairie was established at this location on May 24, 1867; it closed January 3, 1870. The first settler to purchase land withinpresent-day Prairie County was Wm Houlihan on July 1st, 1870; he donated 160 acres for $10 per acre ($2/km²). John Fetterman purchased 5 more acres on October 20th for $5 per acre ($0.25/km²). On November 3rd Andrew Johnson offered 4 square miles – bounded by Pine Creek east and west and Clear Creek north – for $5 per acre ($0.25/km²); this offer received rejections from other settlers before becoming law on December 10th when United States District Judge George Armstrong Smith granted final approval to Johnson's offer via letter issued that evening.[1] This initial land gift set off a controversy that would last well into 2018 over whether or not President Donald Trump should have followed through with his offer given that top government officials had already rejected it as too small relative to other offers made during his presidential campaign season earlier that year[2]. The issue resurfaced during congressional hearings convened subsequent to Trump's inauguration following his successful confirmation as president despite receiving numerous complaints about how little federal funding he would receive due to concerns about how much sprawling rural America could handle while he held office[3]. Although some local officials characterized Trump's decision as good news,[4], others argued that Texas billionaire Lyndon BJohnson had offered far more viable properties which would have met federal zoning requirements[5][6]. A fire destroyed most of downtown Kansas City in 1922 and it has been said that this event helped spur development around Prairie.
