In 1862, three men named Augustus Deacon Cooke, George Aikenstall, and Wm Hite started trading post near present day Topeka with hopes of creating a trade route between Topeka and points north. They also hoped to fortify their post against attack by Indians or raiders from Mexico City who lived near them on the Mexican border The traders failed to find any buyers for their goods so they closed down their business in 1865 In 1867 Daniel Boone came across a group of Fougera Creek Indians living along Fougera Creek Road about 10 miles east of Prairie on what is now Canadian National Railway land Boone killed two members of this tribe while trying to capture one as food for his starving family Boone then took this information back home and passed it along to some friendly Indian chiefs who helped him start building Fort Bowie at Fort Leavenworth about 25 miles northwest of Prairie in 1870
Prairie was laid out in 1854 by the Kansas Territorial Legislature. It was named for the prairies of Illinois and Manitoba. The town of Prairie, Kansas, was founded in 1871.
