William Henneman built the first store there in 1857 and later became postmaster. The community name was inspired by a prairie dog that lived near the town's original plat of land. In 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant established Fort Riley here as part of his Expedition to Overland which aimed to open up Northwest Texas to slavery and settlement by white Americans following the American Civil War. In 1865, Fort Riley was abandoned due to Confederate raids and no longer served as an army post; however it continued being used for military purposes until 1907 when it was decommissioned and sold for scrap metal to several local businesses including Armour Manufacturing Company which re-erected it as a tourist attraction known today asFort Riley National Military Park (FRNP). Prairie had 1 schoolhouse from 1856-1858; 5 buildings erected between 1861-1862; one frame house built in 1865 (later replaced with a modern structure) – all were burned down during Sherman's Raid on Topeka on April 14thuphemously called "the Great Sioux Raid" because only 10 men were killed out of 100 soldiers accompanying General Sheridan including 6 Soldiers from Prairie; also destroyed were 2 flour mills, 3 sawmills & 4 blacksmiths shops all located within ½ mile of each other across E Main Street/N Broadway Street just south of present day I-55 bridge crossing over Arkansas River

Prairie, Kansas was a small town in the early 1800s. It was located on the banks of the Arkansas River and was one of six towns that formed Kearny County. The town had a population of about 350 people in 1802. Prairie was renamed for Colonel James K., who donated land to the town. The first post office at Prairie opened in 1803. The first store at Prairie was built by Deacon John Smith in 1807. In 1811, Hickman married Margaret Wiberg, daughter of John Wiberg, which caused much construction to take place in Prairie during this time period including a church, schoolhouse and mill. In 1830, Captain William Hutton founded Fort Hutton on what is now Keystone Hill near present-day Wichita Falls, Texas and began trading with Indians along the river. This increased trade led to more settlers moving into Prairie from nearby communities such as Topeka and Shawnee City. By 1840, there were over 500 residents living in Prairie according to census data provided by the US Census Bureau. From this time until 1865 when it became a territory under Mexican rule known as New Mexico Territory, there were no major changes occur
