The name "Prairie" is derived from the Dakota language word "paha," meaning "plain." Prairie, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas and is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is one of six towns in Shawnee County that make up the Wichita-Overland Park area, which has a population of over 9 million people. Prairie is also home to Mission Hills Baptist Church which began services in 1872 and now boasts over 350,000 attendees each year. The first settler in Prairie was John Prentice who arrived in 1827. He named his new land Prairie after a prairie dog he found while exploring near Wichita Falls and thought it looked like a map of Canada. A post office called Prairie was established in 1830, and remained active until 1907 when it was discontinued because postal service was taken over by the telephone company. In 1837, Alexander Keith sold 640 acres (250 hectares) to David Brown who named it "Prairie" after his home province of Ontario, Canada. The town site became known as "Brownsburg" after him and his family moved there from Topeka on November 3rd, 1838 according to local history books published during that time period. In 1852 pioneer James Guthrie came across what would become Prairie on his way from Wichita to Lawrence where he intended to settle on some land acquired from Major General James Carleton during the Mexican–American War for $5 per acre ($1/km²). Guthrie's wagon train encountered only friendly Indians along their journey and no pioneers were killed or maimed as a result; this event helped spur Guthrie's settlement efforts at Prairie but did not lead to permanent occupation or development there until well into the 19th century due largely to lack of transportation infrastructure available for settlers arriving by horseback or wagon trains on designated routes typical then for those traveling westward through central Kansas Territory: "the Great Western Road." A post office called Prairie opened in 1865, serving residents throughout Shawnee County; however, mail service within that county ceased operation when railroad construction began nearby so Alfred Brandt assumed control of operations for all Shawnee County posts except White Sands which continued under Postmaster General Amos Kendall’s jurisdiction until 1907 when it too became part of phone company management responsibility On January 1st1887 Henry Wernick started delivering newspapers from his farm located just east of downtown Prairie using an old stagecoach stop off Highway 66 northbound near present day Globe Hill Rd., continuing service until July 30th 1969 when he purchased property northeast corner FM 1092 & US 71 & built himself a duplex house becoming owner/operator #2 most popular newspaperman west OF Wichita." On October 6th1887 Everett Capps set up shop across Pryor Rd from current day Frontier Airport location starting fresh with 2 horses pulling wagons full mercantile supplies down Hwy 66 past today Glendale Dr onto FM 1092SPRINGFIELD KS 95476 Today we are selling our building used only once back then
Prairie was first settled in 1854 by the Kansas Pacific Railroad. The town of Prairie grew around the railroad station, and it became a bustling community with a variety of businesses. In 1916, the town was renamed Topeka after then-Governor John F. Topeka.
