The railroad arrived in 1865 and soon made it one of the most important transportation arteries in eastern Kansas. In 1867, the Union Pacific Railroad built its main line through Prairie to Wichita Falls; this provided much-needed employment for local residents and helped spur development along the rail corridor. Today, there are several small businesses that exist within easy access to metropolitan Topeka via Interstate 65 just east of downtown prairie as well as numerous industrial parks located throughout rural Shawnee County that have sprung up since then due to increased demand for agricultural products exported thence by neighboring Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls
