McClernand who had been Killed in Action at Fort Donelson in March 1862 during the American Civil War. The town was platted by J.W Gunn and W Hargrave on November 3, 1871 as a result of a land grant from Andrew Carnegie to George Armstrong Custer's widow Emilie Custer and her son Harry Custer. Prairie became an important transportation hub for farmers travelling to and from Wichita and other towns in Johnson County. The town’s first store opened in 1886 and its first post office was established in 1889. In 1916, Prairie became the county seat of Johnson County when that county was created from parts of Adams, Clay, Cowley, Elliott, Greenlee,Johnson (Langston), Kellogg (Miami), Linn (Ottawa), Osborne (Snyder) and White Republican counties
