Pittsburg was platted by James Guthrie in 1854 as part of a land grant to David Guthrie from Sacagawea Indian Chief Hennepin County. Today's downtown district was built around what were then local mills: Donelson & Stephens (1854), Armour Manufacturing Company (1916), Wichita-based Midland Iron Works (1920), Midland Steel Works (1991) and First National Bank (2006). The first white settler in Pittsburg was John Stephenson who arrived in 1856 along with his family from Pennsylvania. He built a small cabin on the site now known as Stephenson House which he shared with his brother George Stephenson until 1860 when they moved away because of political persecution led by Andrew Johnson during the Civil War era. After Andrew Johnson's election as president in 1865, many settlers streamed into eastern Shawnee County looking for new opportunities due to Reconstruction Era policies that favored black Americans over whites. Many families left their homes behind and headed westward into what are now Topeka and Kansas City areas where businesses could find customers willing to pay high prices for goods made in slave-owned factories back east during Reconstruction times! After Pittsburgh was established as an independent town on July 20, 1906 by Order No 5885 of Mayor Willard McGee, violence broke out between competing factions within town limits following the installation of a new councilmember composed largely of men appointed by Mayor McGee himself! This situation would not be resolved until November 3rd, 1912 when order No 6244 was issued ordering all residents within town limits to attend a meeting at 7 p.m., which would be followed by an open session at 8 p.m., for the purpose of settling any outstanding disputes! Again violence erupted; this time resulting in three deaths! Community leaders formed what would become known as "The Council" or "The Five Men" responsible for resolving most issues within town limits while still maintaining some degree of control over influential individuals within society! With this newfound sense of security came progressivism; one result being increased business opportunities through incorporations/acquisitions/mergers throughout late 1906 through early 1907! Unfortunately however this type of growth only lasted until 1908 when another municipal merger took place putting an end to all business activity within townlimits once again!? During World War I much military activity took place outside Pittsburg including munitions production at nearby Mound Alloys plant including shells used in Battle Of Gettysburg - making it one of just two cities worldwide involved directly or indirectly in war production! While post-war economic stability ensued with few changes occurring within Pittburg itself other industries soon began emerging such as computer manufacture starting up near First National Bank before moving southward into Wichita area later becoming Microsoft Corporation!! Thanks also to Interstate 55 which connected Pittsburg directly with Wichita via Union Pacific Railroad making life easier for manufacturers!! Despite these positive developments however no majorITF products actually originated from Pittburgh during its heyday! In fact only two companies exported anything here!! One being Plains Data Systems who produced $2 million worth total annually between 1987-2000 before relocating interstate!!! The other company exporting items here was Republic Services precursor to modern day Carrier Air Lines who spawned several subsequent companies including air cargo transport giant FedEx among others!!!! This lack thereof productivity can be partially attributed to lower unemployment rates across Shawnee County after WWI ceased combat operations leaving many unemployed? At least 400 jobs were lost due specificallyto armaments productionachiing declines?? Notable exceptions included steel fabrication plants managed by giant Bethlehem Steel Co whose workforce swelled from 2200 employees prior TO Pearl Harbor TO 7000 employees AFTERWARDS thanks largely TO government contracts !! AlsoITTF manufacturer Keystone Instruments relocated their entire facility HEREA mere 10 miles away FROM PITTBURGH leading directly thereto??? CONSIDERABLE job growth occurred elsewhere adjacent To INDIRECT competitor Quaker Oats albeit without Factory access???? Finally despite widespread job creationpittsburgh remained essentially unchanged thru THE 21st CENTURY???
