In 1881, Kansas was admitted to the United States as a new state. The following year, Pittsburg became the site of the first Territorial Legislature in Kansas. The legislature met in a tent on High Street and passed a bill providing for organization of a militia to protect the state from Native Americans. In 1882, the territory was divided into two districts and an election was held to choose members of territorial government. Pittsburg voted for James Hargrave as its representative to the second district. The territory continued to be divided until 1907 when it was combined with Osborne County and renamed Newton County. In 1912, Newton County changed its name back to Pittsburg County after becoming an integral part of Kansas again. Pittsburg has had some experience with disarmament since it became part of Newton County. On July 1, 1911, local Citizens’ Militia Armory produced three pistols- one British Colt Model No 3 revolver (serial number 10752), one American Peacemaker Revolver (serial number 158) and one 12 ga shotgun- at a cost of $2 each “for use in self-defense only” as required by law during official government functions within county limits not included within city limits or within any other incorporated municipality or community thereof [1]. These guns were used by law enforcement officials during early years of Pittsburg's incorporation as well as through World War I when there was no army presence in the area; however they were not kept around long enough for them to become collectible pieces like many other firearms that have been brought into circulation over time such as old rifles or shotguns that are now museum pieces!
