Pittsburg was a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States until it was merged into Wichita on January 1, 1907. The community is located in the Pittsburg-Hutchinson Micropolitan Statistical Area. It had a population of 542 as of the 2000 census. Pittsburg first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as "Neillstown". It was renamed Pittsburg in 1892 after John G. Pittman, who was then an agent for the Santa Fe Railway. The post office at Pittsburg opened on November 15, 1893 and remained in operation until it closed on December 16, 1912. Pittsburg's first church was built in 1892 by Reverend James McGillivray and built across from the courthouse. The present building is dedicated to Mrs. Lillie Means McKee and served as their Methodist church until 1954 when they moved to Wichita and replaced it with a new building which still serves as their church today. In 1902, J J McLaughlin started a store at what is now known as Main Street and engine No 6 became known locally as "The Locomotive" because he would bring it around town for people to ride on during summertime tours of hillsides near his store locations (now demolished). In 1907, when Pittsburg-Hutchinson was formed from Douglas County, Pittsburg joined with Hutchinson to form one municipality effective January 1st 1907 According to the USGS Topo Maps of 1903 and 1905; most of what is now Pittsburg & Hutchison were part of Wellston Township but some neighborhoods such as Cambria Heights were detached from Wellston Township eastward along Highway 356 South between Osmond Road (now Harvey Road) & Community Creek (now Justus Road)). Cambria Heights annexation took place effective June 3rd 1905 while Most Holy Trinity Church incorporation took place effective October 9th 1904 followed by Crossroads Baptist Church Annexation Effective November 25th 1903 both located just south of current day Cambria Heights Boulevard/Highway 356 intersection). This map also shows that wellston township boundaries continued eastward along Willow Creek towards Topeka before eventually terminating at Riverbend Lake about 8 miles northnorthwest of Hutchison
Moses Wittman was born in Pittsburg, Kansas on January 3, 1857. Wittman was a Congressman from Kansas and the son of a Methodist minister. Wittman's political career began in 1893 when he won election to the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat. In 1897, he ran for office again and won an open seat in the U.S. Senate, serving until 1913 when he resigned to run for president as a Progressive Party candidate. He lost to Woodrow Wilson by 1% of the popular vote and never regained his congressional seat or Senate seat.
