Pittsburg, Kansas is home to one of the oldest optical shops in the United States. The business was founded by William C. Fenton in 1892. At that time, Pittsburg was an agricultural town located about 20 miles southeast of Wichita. Fenton's shop was a small, family-owned business that sold mainly glassware and lenses for microscopes and telescopes. In 1901, Fenton passed his business on to his son, W.C.Fenton Jr., who continued the family name until 1957 when it changed to Optical Industries Incorporated (OII). OII became a world leader in the manufacture of optical products including spectacles, sunglasses, contact lenses, window blinds and other household appliances. In 1984, OII merged with Raytheon Company to form Raytheon/OII Corporation (now Raytheon Co., Inc.). During its more than 100 years as a leading player in optics manufacturing, OII has produced some of the most celebrated products in history such as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and The Beatles' Yellow Submarine. At that time, there were few telephone companies in the area and businesses such as LensCrafters and photographic equipment stores needed to have optic products available for customers to purchase. The early Optical Equipment Store in Pittsburg was one of the first businesses in the area to sell optics. In 1923, Sperry Inc., an American optical manufacturer, opened its first factory in Pittsburg. From then until the early 2000s, Sperry Industries was headquartered in Pittsburg.

Pittsburg is part of the Topeka-Anaheim, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pittsburg began as a log cabin community founded by pioneers John and Jane Pitts in 1854. In 1865, a post office was established at Pittsburg; it remained in operation until 1893. In 1892, the town became an incorporated municipality under the name Pittsburg; it remains an incorporated municipality today. The town's first school was built in 1865 by Jethro Lewis and his wife Mary Ann Lewis; it served as a school until 1923 when a new school building was completed. The current elementary school building was built in 1951 and serves as the town's primary educational institution for children aged 6 to 12 years old. The high school also serves as the town's primary educational institution for students aged 13 to 17 years old; however, this high school has not been operational since 2002 due to budget cuts made by then-Mayor Lyle Ferguson Jr.. A new high school building will be completedometime during 2017/2018 and will serve as Pittsburg's replacement for the current highschool which is on its last legs financially speaking In 2008/2009, Pittsburg reached its all time low with only 511 residents living there including just 2 people who worked at their local grocery store which had ceased operations 3 years prior due to economic hard times that hit many small towns across America

The town was named for the Pittsburg Plateau, a long section of high mountain country that stretched from central Kansas to eastern Oklahoma. The area had been home to the Wichita people since before European settlement. In 1862, the Union army reached Pittsburg and burned down most of the town’s buildings. The following year, General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Pittsburg and ordered all citizens to leave. A few remaining residents took up arms and fought against Grant’s soldiers, but were eventually defeated. In 1865, Pittsburg became a “free city” under the jurisdiction of Topeka. From 1894 until it was annexed into Topeka in 1907, Pittsburg served as an important transportation hub for both Kansas City and Wichita. In 1912, Pittsburg was renamed Claremore after local attorney Gouverneur Morris Claremore III (1847-1925). Claremore had played a significant role in helping negotiate Nebraska’s admission into the United States as a state in 1959. Pittsburgh lost its status as an important transportation hub when Interstate 40 opened in 1960 and replaced Route 66 as the main artery through Topeka. However, it has experienced resurgence in recent years due to its location within easy reach of numerous universities and other cultural attractions statewide.
