The city is named for John C. Pitts, an early settler and one of the first men to cross the Great Plains in1863. A post office was established in 1875 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Pittsburg has been home to many gun shows and conventions over the years such as "The Gun Show" which took place every other year from 1978-1982 and "Gunsmoke Shoot Out!" which took place every other year from 1990-1998. In 2006, "The Gun Showcase: Pittsburg's Treasures from History" was held at the Eisenhower Executive Airport Convention Center where more than 60 guns were on display including some that had not been seen before.

In 1907, they sold the building to J.P. Morgan & Company for $825,000 after having been used as their corporate Headquarters since 1906 when they merged with The Trust Company of America (TCA). In 1911, TCA merged with Kuhn Loeb & Co., which made Pittsburg one of the first American cities to be involved in an organized securities market brawl known as "The Big Bang". On October 6th of that year during what would become known as Black Monday (), Kuhn Loeb & Co.'s stockmarket debut saw its share value plummet following accusations by some investors that they had misled them about future prospects for steel production in Mexico (). After hours trading continued throughout November but eventually closed down due to heavy losses (-$5 million USD) for Kuhn Loeb & Co.'s entire shares outstanding (). This event is generally considered to have signaledthe end of the dotcom bubble which began bubbling up over Wall Street just before Pittsburg's incorporation into Wichita on December 2nd 1997 ().
