The first people to live in Pittsburg were the Osage Indians. They came there from the east in 1854 and built a trading post on the north side of Arkansas River. In 1857, John Denton founded what would become Pittsburg Post Office. He named it for his hometown of Pittsburg, Scotland. The first school in Pittsburg was built in 1859 by Mrs. Julia Cushing and was used as a night school until 1865 when it became an all-day school under Governor Moses Lawrence's auspices. In 1861, George Hantz established a cotton gin and mill here which soon became one of the largest cotton gins and mills in Kansas City Territory (later Missouri). Hantz also constructed a large house here that still stands today as the Old Ranch House Museum. In 1865, Washburne Sonell arrived from Illinois with his family and graced us with their presence for many years; he remained our largest landowner until his death in 1938. In 1902, Jules Kroc set up Camp Kroc about two miles southeast of Pittsburg on Beaver Creek Road near present day South Park Elementary Schoolá At first he managed only 10 acres but over time increased production to 100 acres; this camp served as headquarters for several cattle drives that ranged through much of Oklahoma Territory during the early days of Cowboy America . After World War I ended there were numerous small businesses started throughout surrounding counties like poultry processing plants being developed at nearby Anadarko where soybean oil was processed into fuels such as kerosene for automobiles
