Pittsburg was founded in 1867 by Captain John L. Stevenson and his wife Jane. The first post office in Pittsburg was established in 1871. In 1907, the town had a population of 653 and a school which served gradeschool-12th grade students. In 1912, the Pittsburg Post Office closed due to lack of mail processing capacity and it merged with nearby Hutchinson to form Hutchinson-Pittsburg School District #1 which still operates today as an all-girls high school. In 1923, Plymouth Wagon Road (now US Route 66) crossed the Delaware River into what is now Pittsburg from Hutchinson and this made it possible for people who were living in Hutchison or Pratt City to trade goods with those living in Pittsburg without having to go through Wichita or Dodge City. The first store on Plymouth Wagon Road was built by George Davenport and opened on November 10, 1923. On July 12, 1924, there was a fire at the Joplin Globe newsprint mill that destroyed most of the town’s businesses including its Post Office which closed down for good on October 7th that year The only other business remaining open after the fire was an insurance company which continued operations until January 1925 when it also went out of business The last day anyone could buy goods at the old post office before it closed down was October 7th 1925 On October 11th 1925 captain john Stevenson died suddenly while campaigning for president against Herbert Hoover After captain Stevenson’s death there wasn’t much activity in Pittsburg until around 1927 when Charlie Fenton came over from Hutchinson and started running things . AfterCharlieFenton took over things started going back up again until 1942 when World War II began . 1945 saw some rebuilding but no new businesses started up until 1951 when Donnie Swartz bought the building next door to his parents house and reopened shop as Donnie's Wilburn Furniture Store In 1952 Bob Kapp took over from Donnie Swartz as owner of Donnie's Wilburn Furniture Store
