When the town of Pittsburg, Kansas was first settled in 1881, it consisted of a small cluster of log cabins on the edge of a prairie. The only way for people to get guns and ammunition was by trading with Native Americans or buying them from other settlers. There were no gun stores in present-day Pittsburg, so people had to go outside to get their supplies. In 1911, the Pittsburg Gun Club opened its doors for business. At that time, Pittsburg was one of the few towns in Kansas that had a gun club. The club provided members with guns and ammunition for hunting and target shooting. The club also sold tools used in gunsmithing such as hammers and screws. In 1933, when the National Firearms Act went into effect, Pittsburg became one of the first towns in Kansas to implement firearm regulation. Other early buildings include: A new brick high school was opened in 1966 by then-Mayor Don Walters with funds raised through an effort called " Build It or Let It Fall" during his campaign for mayor against incumbent John Witherspoon; that year, Pittsburg voters passed an ordinance authorizing construction of a new high school using money raised from fines levied against businesses over $500 per year after approval by their City Councilman at its meeting that winter. The new high school was dedicated on October 4th, 1966 by then-Governor Bruce Babbitt (D). That same year saw completion of what would become known as "the Golden Age of High School Sports", with all four varsity sports teams playing their annual state championships at Comanche Park later that summer under then-High School Athletic Director Herb Hargrave (now Wichita Foundation President/CEO).
