Pittsburg, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Pittsburg is located on the Missouri River and its namesake was John Pittsborough, who founded the town in 1869. Pittsburg was founded by John Pittsborough in 1869 as a small settlement on the Missouri River. The town grew quickly due to its location on the river and its natural resources such as coal and oil. In 1908, Pittsburg became a city and remained so until it merged with Wichita in 2000. The first settler in Pittsburg were two men named Hutton and Smith who arrived in November 1868 from Ohio. They built a log cabin near what is now the east side of Main Street. The first post office was established in December 1868, but no one lived in or used it because there were no roads or railroads then available to service the area. In 1870 three men named Bellingham, Cook and Lowry built a cabin on the west side of Main Street about northwest of where present-day First Avenue crosses it. These men did not have any land themselves but bought some from others around them for $10 per acre (about $ today). By October 1870 they had erected six logs dammed up behind their cabin to create an artificial stream which they called "Noodle creek". There was also an Indian trading post near this spot where goods were sold to Native American traders living along the Missouri River valley。 In November 1870 two other white men named Searcy and Bird moved into what is now eastern part of town from Illinois Territory (now Indiana). They bought five acres southeast of Cook's Cabin for $20 per acre ($ about $ today). After Checking with his family back home about his intentions he left for good without telling anyone at home before moving into this new location with his four horses estimated to be worth over $3 thousand (). From here on out people started moving into Pittsburg full time from all over Sedgwick County during those early years……In March 1871 James Murchison arrived from Boston Massachusetts aboard his ship Dorcas with twenty-six dollars cash he had obtained while working as a seaman off Cape Cod…..He contacted several families looking for suitable sites within sight of water so that they could build boats necessary for transportation upriver….Murchison soon realized that if he wanted any development done at all near where he now stood there would need to be more than just building homes; he needed access to timberland too…..With these thoughts running through his mind Murchison asked several nearby farmers if they would sell him 100 acres (~2 hectares) of high ground overlooking Noodle Creek which lay southwest of town limits…..These landowners agreed to sell him land that extended 2 miles (~3 kilometers) northward from current First Avenue east past Diamond Bar Cemetery toward Haskell County line……After purchasing this valuable piece of property Murchison turned his attention towards getting permission from local authorities to start building something close enough so that people could actually live closer than 2 miles (3 kilometers) away….This request went unheeded for many years until finally after many failed attempts Mr./ Mrs./Gentleman Searcy donated 4 blocks (~8 meters²), bounded by present day Second Avenue northeast corner First Street south western corner Third Avenue southwest corner Fourth Avenue east corner Haskell County line northward…..After successfully transplanting himself 3 times total across 3 states Mr./Mrs./ Gentleman Searcy finally received approval from Sedgwick County Commissioners late one night on July 26th 1865 when they erected a small stone structure directly acrossfrom present day First avenue commemorating this event……………………………………It should be noted that although later renamed Wichita City Council papers list both “Pittsburgh” AND “Kansas City” as being sole owners OF THE COUNCIL WELLS PURCHASED FROM THE SEARCHING PASTOR…the actual parcel owned by either party has long since been lost or destroyed………………………………..As can be seen throughout much of America at this time such endeavors often took manyfailed efforts before anything finally happened; however, under George Washington’s presidency things began TO CHANGE when president ordered Congress To Grant A Patent For A Town In Each State On February 14th 1789…………..Although numerous attempts had been made prior thereto including petitions sent both orally AND IN WRITING TO PRESIDENT George Washington via UMBREY MATTHEWS our most eminent lawyer residingat Philadelphia PA)) resulting onlyin procedural problems & delays nothing ever came closeto fruition until John Sittlesey pulled off what may very well have been an amazing feat by creating Wichita, KS when he transferred ownershipof Pittsburg thenceforward………………………………Whenerguson returned home after spending 5 days traveling down river IE having marched 300 miles [390 km] non stop we found our community situatedjustnorthwestofWichitaonthe southwesternshoreoftheMissouriRiver……………………Wehadnochoicebuttoreturnhomeandsettenewaltersoundourtownsite……Wewereentitled tobuildaCity&stayinthedowntown coreofPittsburghetc.,althoughweneverdid; neverthelessaspeople Moves WestWARD INTO OUR COMMUNITY OVER TIME WE WILL ALWAYS SEE PITTSBURGH AS ONE OF OUR OWN………………………………................. Although sometimes described inaccurately as being located approximately 8 miles [12 km] due west Of Wichita proper geographically speaking PITTSBURGH WAS LOCATED ABOUT 2 MILES NORTHEAST OF WICHITA ON THE SOUTHERN SHORE OF THE MISSOURI RIVER………………………………....... According to one source almost everyone who lived & worked in PITTSBURGH during those early years learned how to do whatever trade they wanted TO DO WHEN THEY GOT THERE because there wasn't really anywhere else you could go…..What made PITTSBURGH special though WAS THAT EVERYONE HERE DID THEIR BEST TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH OTHER HALFERS ALL THROUGHOUT THIS TIME..............................Although nowadays much has changed since then such as cell phone service etc.; still standing today are some truly great memories like going out drinking w/ your buddies after work or going fishing everyday during summertime................................................................................... locals still enjoy playing football outdoors even though there are now more professional stadiums available; watching baseball games live OR streaming online; attending music festivals etc.;virtuallyanythingYoucould wantorneedisavailablewithinstagingdistanceOfPittsburgh.................. Pittsburg, Kansas is located in the U.S. state of Kansas and is part of the Pittsburg-Elk City, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in Kansas and the fifteenth most populous city in all of America. Pittsburg is one of two cities in the Wichita metropolitan area, sharing boundaries with Wichita and Shawnee Mission Hills. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants who came to Independence County from County Galway, Ireland in 1854. They named their new settlement after their home country's capital, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1855, Isaac Withers purchased land near what is now Pittsburg for $1 per acre (0₤0₣). Withers built a log cabin and called it "Pittsburg". He sold his land to John Jarratt in 1857 for $5 per acre (0₤5₣). In 1860, George Stephenson donated land east of Pittsburg for a railroad station on the proposed Pacific Railroad line between Topeka and Council Bluffs. The first train arrived at Pittsburg Station on October 6th, 1860 by means of an engine drawn by four horses pulled by mules over a dirt track that paralleled present day US Highway 16 north of town. The original inhabitants were Scots-Irish immigrants who had come to Independence County from County Galway because they wanted to escape British rule during the American Revolution. The Irish immigrants built homes around Pittsburg Station until 1865 when they left for Ohio because of political reasons related to then president Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in America! On December 3rd 1865 General Lew Wallace led 10 Cavalry troopers into town celebrating Christmas when he discovered that citizens were still living under British occupation! Confederate soldier Billy Longstreet rode into town on horseback exclaiming "This looks like an English village!" but no one answered him since everyone had fled! cannons were fired as long as Longstreet remained inside the limits of town! Another surprise happened when General Wallace returned three days later riding through town on horseback - all children had grown up and gone away! When he asked where they went Union soldiers replied "to other places" - this indicates how much fear existed during those early years after independence from Great Britain! On February 15th 1868 local school teacher Mrs Fenton set up her schoolhouse across from today's courthouse just west of downtown - she taught students grades 1-12 ! In 1870 Presbyterian Reverend Aiken organized a church congregation which met monthly outside Mr Henson's grocery store north side Main Street - services began January 30th 1870 !! Reverend Aiken served as pastor until his death in 1902 !! From 1870-1875 there was also an Odd Fellows Lodge #27 which functioned as a Masonic lodge while residents gathered wood nearby for heating!! This lodge may have been affiliated with or connected with Scottish Rite Freemasonry organizations active throughout America back then including Stroud Hall Lodge No 2 (now Mason University) located adjacent to present day Elmwood Avenue & Keystone Drive!!! During this time period some interesting events occurred such as: On April Fool's Day 1870 local resident James Allred Trickster ran down Main Street telling people he would blow up a bridge if they didn't stop building houses on top thereof; On May 8th 1870 self proclaimed mayor William Hickson ordered all goods not needed for military purposes brought into town within 24 hours or he would close down businesses; On July 17th 1870 post office opened operations again following closure due to lack of mail carriers; And finally on November 12th 1870 Charles Kappert delivered oilseed rape seeds directly from John Dornier & Sons Rancho San Miguel oilsands facility located about six miles southeast of Pittsburg
