Pittsburg, Kansas is a town in Pratt County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. Pittsburg is located on the Arkansas River. The first settlers in Pittsburg were Seth and Nancy Sprague and their families who arrived from New York in 1854. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1863, John Patton came to Pittsburg from Illinois with his family and built a log cabin on the west side of the river. The Patton family stayed for many years until they moved to Emporia, Kansas in 1886. In 1892, A.J. White and his wife Margaret journeyed to Pittsburg from Topeka after hearing about it from friends there. They bought 160 acres of land east of the river and started building a house which they named "White's Cabin". It became known as "Pittsburg" because of its location on the Arkansas River near where that river crossed into Pratt County. In 1902, Mrs White donated land to create an elementary school which was later renamed "Pittsburg State Teachers College". In 1954, when Pratt County was created by statehood laws, Pittsburg became part of it and remained so until 1959 when it reverted back to Pratt County control again
Pittsburg was founded in 1854 by John C. Pittman and his wife, Sarah. The first post office in Pittsburg was established in 1855. In 1870, the town of Pittsburg became a county seat of Finney County. In 1912, the county seat moved to Wichita Falls, Texas.
