The history of Pittsburg began in 1881 when Sylvanus Pitts built a log cabin on what is now known as Church Hill Road. He and his wife, Mary Jane White, raised two children there before moving to Hutchinson in 1886 to start a family again. In 1892, they bought land from John Wills for $5 per acre (). They further improved their farm by planting corn, wheat and beans. In 1902 they sold their land to Harry Aiken for $10 per acre (). Harry Aiken operated a sawmill there until 1916 when he sold it to Jerald Henson for $40 per acre (). In 1927 George Henson purchased the Henson Sawmill from Jerald Henson for $60 per acre (). He continued operations until 1978 when he sold it to William Burchnell for $30 per acre ($2 million today). He then donated it to Pittsburg Community College which operates it currently. In 1951 Leland Soddy founded Park City Paper Company with his brother-in-law Harvey Ives () in order to produce paper products from woodchips that were being produced nearby by Chilton Paper Plant(). After several years of production (), Park City Paper Company merged with Chilton Paper Plant() in 1969 and ceased operations due to environmental concerns about their product plant's use of coal dust emissions(). The site was redeveloped into the current Pittsburg Community College campus in 2001.)

A post office was established here in 1886 and remained open until it closed in 1904. The first school opened here in 1892 and operated for three years before being replaced by a new school that began operations in 1895. In 1903, Pittsburg had two churches- an evangelical Protestant church and a Catholic church. The Catholic church burned down on October 25th, 1903, but the Evangelical Protestant church continued to use its facilities until 1915 when they merged into one congregation. In 1907, Pittsburg had two businesses- an grocery store and a blacksmith shop-. In 1911, Pittsburg had four schools- one public school and three private schools-. In 1914, Pittburgh had six businesses- five stores and one restaurant-. By 1930, there were only three businesses left operating within the town limits- two groceries and one restaurant-. By 1940, all but one business within town boundaries had closed down or been acquired by other businesses.- The last business to close down within Pittsburg was the grocery store which reopened as a convenience store about 1985
