ThePittsburg Massacre occurred on October 17, 1907 when two gunmen opened fire on a group of unarmed citizens who had gathered to protest against railroad construction just east of town. Twenty-one people were killed and thirty-six wounded, most of whom were women and children attending church services that day. The event remains one of Wichita's most notorious tragedies. Pittsburg has experienced many changes over time including becoming an agricultural center during World War II as Japan bombed American cities and production relocated to war plants; experiencing rapid growth following World War III as technology advanced; and developing into a major commercial node after Wichita's annexation by Kansas City in 2000. Pittsburg has seen some significant progress since then including becoming home to a new high school, cultural attractions such as the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp facility, and increasing development around its downtown core which now features several restaurants, retail stores, and public housing developments

After Pittsburg lost its status as an agricultural center during that period, it developed into a primarily industrial city after the opening of nearby Wichita Falls in 1954. Pittsburg has since become one of Wichita Falls' most visited areas for shopping and entertainment; its skyline is well-known throughout eastern Texas for its large light poles known as "pikes."
