Pittsburg, Kansas is a small town in western Kansas that was founded in 1854. The population of Pittsburg was 2,158 at the 2010 census. Pittsburg is located about 20 miles west of Topeka and 10 miles north of Wichita. The townsite formed when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad built a track through the area. The first settler in Pittsburg was James Sayers, who arrived in 1854. He and his family erected a cabin on the east side of Old Hennepin creek. Sayers died in 1855, but his wife, Fanny, and their three children continued to live there until they moved to Topeka in 1861. They were followed by other settlers, including John Blythe and George Tilton. In 1881, Arent Cramer purchased land southwest of Pittsburg from William Haskell for $1,000. He began developing it into a farmstead called "Cramer's Valley." In 1912 he sold the farm to Lilla Fuller for $15,000. Fuller spent many years renovating and expanding Cramer's Valley into what it now stands as a two-story wood frame building with an attached garage/workshop complex dating back to 1916. In 1954, when Pittsburg incorporated as a village, its first mayor was Earle Wampler Jr.. Today, Mayor Randy Patton leads the village government with office hours 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday except holidays). Councillors are elected at large with no partisan affiliation; all positions are filled based on nominations received from citizens residing within theVillage limits . There are six full-time street keepers (maintained by Village Manager Randy Patton) as well as one part-time street keeper responsible for servicing only one block adjacent to downtown Pittsburg Village Limits; this block includes most of Center Street between First Street and Second Street

The first school in Pittsburg was built on Third Street in 1871 and served the community until it closed in 1924. The first doctor to serve Pittsburg was Dr. George Fenton who arrived from Illinois in December of 1872. After serving for several years he moved to Topeka where he became a practicing physician. In 1886, Mayor John Denny made the decision to rename Pittsburg after Samuel J. Weir, ambassador to Mexico City at the time and one of America's leading men during that era. Weir had been instrumental as president of Wichita Bible Institute which later became Wichita State University
