In 1907–08, an oil well was drilled near Pittsburg by J P Aritschman & Sons under contract from Wichita-based Gulf Oil Company (later ExxonMobil). After producing some gas during its first year of operation but no oil, Gulf sold its interest to Barnett Oil Corporation which continued production from the well for another decade before selling it to Pembroke Energy Development Company effective January 1st 2003. In late 2006 BP withdrew support from Pembroke after revelations about Deepwater Horizon blowouts that had occurred weeks earlier; as a result of this withdrawal BP divested itself of all interests within Pembroke Energy Development Company including Pittsburg's water supply company which became part of Peabody Energy LLC

Pittsburg, Kansas is a city in Pittsburg County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,683 at the 2010 census. It is the principal town of Pittsburg Township. Pittsburg was founded in 1867 by John A.Wright and his brother-in-law Samuel Workman as a small trading post on the Lecompton River. In 1868, Wright began to build a gristmill that became one of the largest in the region and quickly became an important center for agriculture and commerce. The mill continued to be enlarged until it reached its peak production in 1907 when it processed 20 million bushels of wheat per day. By 1904, only 2 percent of all Pittsburg's total output came from manufacturing; 90 percent came from agriculture and trade. Pittsburgh's importance declined during World War I due to strategic factors including geographical isolation (the closest major market was Wichita), low demand for agricultural goods due to wartime restrictions on exports, and increased competition from Wichita's burgeoning industrial sector. However, Pittsburgh bounced back during World War II with its significant contributions to both military efforts (such as providing munitions factories) and economic development (such as creating new jobs in transportation). The city experienced another period of growth following the war but again slowed during the postwar era as technological advances made it more difficult to produce traditional agricultural products such as wheat without relying on foreign inputs. However, Pittsburgh regained some prominence starting in the late 1980s when it became home to two major pharmaceutical companies— GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis—and several other major research institutions statewide. Additionally, Pittsburg has become known for its large collection of art objects which has been featured at various museum exhibitions throughoutKansas and beyond
