The Parson family also operated pumpjacks on their farm until about 1950 when it was sold to another family. The old farmhouse still stands next to the high school which was built in 1907 by school trustees Jno Crain and Elisha Hapgood. In 1951, local resident Harry Barker donated land adjacent to High School for use as an open-air science exhibit called "The Barker Experiment." This facility remains today as an educational museum with exhibits on energy production dating back to 1880s oil well drilling operations in Texas! Other significant businesses that have located or are currently located in Parsons include Browning Arms Manufacturing Company (1914-present), Western Exhaust Products Co., Inc (1911-present), Hutchinson Coal Mines & Coke Co., Ltd (1890-1900), Standard Oil of California (1915-present), First National Bank of Parsons (1898-1964) and Midland States Paper Corporation (1920). Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site also lies within town limits; this is a large 2 story wood frame structure with Renaissance Revival Style features that dates from 1912.
Parsons was founded in 1854 by George W. Parsons and his brother-in-law, Hiram B. Davison. The town was named for General James A. Parsons, who had died in 1847 at the age of 42 from a wound received during the Mexican War. The first post office was established in Parsons on November 9, 1854.
