On January 1, 1920,[2] Parsons became an official city,[3] based on the merger of two adjacent towns - Palmyra (founded 1907) to the east and Reedsburg (founded 1888) to the west - which had both grown rapidly since their incorporation into cities status years earlier. The oil boom that followed World War II led to rapid growth in Parsons during the late 1940s through early 1950s; however, this prosperity came at a price: high levels of crime[4][5][6], especially among young people who were drawn to downtown areas where liquor stores and other nightlife activities were available.[7][8][9] This violence also attracted attention from law enforcement officials who responded with increased patrols aroundtown.[10] As part as part of efforts to reduce crime rates,[11][12][13] including targeted streetwise interventions[14], then-Mayor Don Brown announced plans in December 2005 to demolish four buildings within downtown boundaries that had been used as illegal gambling dens; these buildings were located near Interstate 35W exit 121B which served as an important transportation link for criminals trafficking drugs and alcohol from Mexico into Wichita
