Parsons, Kansas is a small town in McGregor County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McGregor County and lies on the Saline River. The town was founded in 1879 by farmers John Parsons and his family. The name comes from Andrew Parsons, one of the original settlers. Parsons became a railroad man and built a sawmill in Parsons City in 1903. He also built a store and post office there. In 1911, he donated land to build an agricultural college in honor of his son-in-law, George Cramer Jr., who had been president of Lawrence University (now Kansas State University). The college opened in 1912 as Wichita State College and changed its name to Kansas State University in 1938. In 1951, it became Parsons Collegiate Institute.
