The townsite that now includes Parsons was donated to the city of Lawrence by John W. Parsons and his wife Jane in 1907 when they were purchasing land for their new home there. The first settler in Parsons was Mrs. Averill Hargrave who arrived with her family from Illinois on July 17, 1881. Mrs.(Averill) Hargrave's husband George watermarked the stop sign for "Parsons" on November 6th 1881 while he unloaded supplies from the wagons at the train depot across from what is nownorthwest corner of First Avenue and Third Street (now east side of First Avenue). This stop served as an early warning system for future settlers about possible Indian conflicts near this location since it would be necessary to cross Nebraska River to get to this area from where many trails led into Wichita County

The first settlement in Parsons was made on July 24, 1854 when three men from Topeka and two men from Canada discovered land near what is now Parsons. The site was named "New Kensington" after John Kensington, an Englishman who had bought the land in 1849. A post office called New Kensington was established in 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1860, Daniel Boone purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of Parsons from Asahel Dickinson for $5 per acre. This land became known as the Parkland sale. In 1865, Randolph Carver donated 1/2 mile (1 km) of road to be named after him and other members of his family. That same year, he also donated 20 acres (10 ha) to the town of Parsons for public use and education purposes only. On March 10, 1867, James Bogue organized a company to sell 640 acres (248 ha) around present-day Parsons for $12 per acre to settlers who could improve it by planting orchard fruits and vegetables on the property or build a school or church thereon within ten years. On October 15th 1870 Charles Goodyear acquired 2 square miles (6 km²), north of present-day Parsons (), including all that later became Topeka Township
