Parsons is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Parsons was James A. Parsons who arrived in 1854. He built the first log cabin in what is now Parsons. The town was named after John Parsons, one of the original settlers. In 1881, the Haskell Land Company organized a township and granted it to Levi Payson and his brother-in-law Jacob Hale. They named it Hutchinson Township after Hutchinson County, Kansas, where they also lived at that time. In 1902, they sold their share of the township to Harry Wirths and George Crouch for $6,000 cash plus interest on $8,500 worth of notes due from the Haskell Land Company on November 1st of that year. This led to the name change from Hutchinson Township to Parsons Village by Act No.. 283 of 1903 which became effective February 17th following passage by the Kansas Legislature thereof providing for an election to be held therein “for apportionment among all townships within this state” subject only to certain qualifications as set forth therein; namely: (1) That no more than three fifths of its population may be composed of Indians or non-white persons ; (2) That there shall not be more than one negro inhabitant per thousand inhabitants ; (3) That no person owning real property within two miles square containing any village or postoffice shall become president or memberof a boardwalk committee; (4) That no person having title thereto shall pledge support or subscription to any organization opposed thereto during general elections; Accordingly on Tuesday evening preceding March 3rd inclusive a meeting was called together by Jno Haughey convening at his house in order that he might determine upon measures necessary for carrying into effect said act aforesaid; resulted in adoption thereof by yeomen present including myself with yeoman vote nigh unto unanimous consent
Parsons, Kansas was founded in 1867 by George W. Parsons and is the seat of Johnson County. The town was named after George Parsons, a settler who donated land to the town. The first post office was established in Parsons in 1868. The population of Parsons increased rapidly due to the discovery of oil and gas reserves in nearby Black Mesa and many businesses were started here including a Standard Oil refinery. In 1915, the town had a population of over 10,000 people and became an important center for oil production with its own drilling rigs and refineries. However, when World War I began, the industry fell apart as companies went out of business; by 1923, only one refinery remained in operation in Parsons.
