In 1881, Parsons was a small town in Kansas. It was located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town had been founded by settlers who arrived in 1849. In 1861, the Union army invaded Kansas and destroyed many of the towns and villages along the way. One of the few to remain standing was Parsons. The residents of Parsons fought hard against the Union forces and were able to save their community from destruction. The town's history began with handguns. Prior to 1861, handguns were not common in Kansas and there were no legal restrictions on how they could be used. However, due to this fact, pistols became very popular among local law enforcement officers and farmers. Because pistols could be easily concealable, they quickly gained a following among these individuals. As time passed, handgun laws changed in Kansas and became more restrictive. Starting in 1902, it was illegal to possess any handgun without a license from the county sheriff or state police officer. This rule applied even to those who possessed firearms for personal protection purposes only! These regulations lasted until 1934 when an amendment to the state Constitution allowed citizens to own handguns for hunting purposes! Parsons, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Parsons County. It was founded in 1881 by Ira Parsons and his wife Anna Merkel as a small town on the edge of what is now Wichita County. The name was chosen to honor General James K. Polk, who had been president when Parsons was born in 1846. The city's original center was located on the east side of present-day Main Street between Second and Third Streets, where two early businesses were built: The Germania Hall (now home to Spectrum Health) and The Post Office Savings Bank (now Home Depot). On July 1, 1886, Parsons became one of twelve cities named by President Grover Cleveland to become part of the newly created city of Wichita Falls. In 1907, due to numerous construction projects associated with Wichita Falls' progress as an industrial center during that decade, downtown business owners petitioned for annexation into Parsons; this request was granted on October 2 that year by City Manager John Ahern. This event marks Wichita Falls' first formal annexation into another municipality since its creation as a city in 1888. After World War II ended in 1945, downtown business owners lobbied for again annexing into Parsons due to housing shortages within the new postwar suburban areas around Wichita Falls; this request also received approval from City Manager Ahern on October 2 that year. In 1951–1952, renovation work began on the old Germania Hall building which would serve as home until 1978 when it burned down; at that time it served as headquarters for then-Mayor Don Greggs’ administration during his mayoral term from 1951-1957. On November 11, 1956 local resident Harry Burkholder detonated an atomic bomb over Ennis while attempting to detonate a movie set he owned there; as a result both Ennis and Hutchinson were destroyed with most buildings still standing within five years after the blast which destroyed much acreage near Ennis but not Hutchinson which sit today adjacent to Interstate 35 southbound exit #5B
Parsons, Kansas was founded in 1867 by John Parsons and his family. The town was named for John Parsons' father, who had moved to the area from Illinois. The first post office in Parsons was established in 1868. In 1870, the first cotton gin in Parsons was built. By 1886, the population of Parsons had grown to over 100 residents. In 1915, the Great Depression hit Parsons hard and many businesses closed their doors. However, John Kircher started a small hardware store in Parsons and helped drive some of the local businesses back into business. In 1951, the town saw its first census which showed that it had an population of 455 people. Over time, more businesses have opened up around Parsons and the town has seen growth both physically and culturally.
