Parsons, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita-Hutchinson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on May 20, 1881 by brothers George and John Parsons. The community name may be from "honest Abe" (Abe Lincoln), who helped found the town in 1881. The town was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant on October 6, 1907 after he became the first President of Kansas. On November 8, 1907, the towns of Lakin and Parsons were joined to form Parsons with a population of 2,191 residents. In 1903/4 gun manufacturer Evert & Wesson merged with Colt & Co., which made guns for both American and British markets; these guns are known as English arms or PEACE Guns because they were not exported to the United States until 1934. The Parsons Massacre took place on October 14, 1871, when a group of local farmers mounted an attack on a gun factory in the town of Parsons. The attackers were led by John C. Fremont, an American rancher and militia leader who had earlier been acquitted of charges of treason for his role in the Dakota War. The massacre resulted in the death of at least 26 people, including nine children.
