Parsons and named after his friend and collaborator on the first Wichita Missionary Baptist Church in nearby Topeka, William C. Parsons. Parsons was settled by farmers who made their living growing corn, beans, and other crops. In 1886 the first post office in Parsons was established; it operated for six years until it was moved to Topeka. The townspeople built a sawmill and gristmill around 1900; these were replaced by a coal mine and refinery in 1925. The mine closed in 1984 but the city still uses part of it as its municipal center; there are also several industrial parks nearby that have been used for various purposes since the late twentieth century including an auto plant (now closed), an ammunition factory (closed), and a chemical plant (closed). The city has several public buildings dating from before its incorporation as a town: A courthouse which served as both courthouse and jail duringowsdays; a schoolhouse which served grades one through twelve until 1907 when consolidation with Topeka led to its withdrawal from education;an old Methodist church which sits on what is now known as Liberty Avenue east of Main Street;and two churches—one German Lutheran and one Evangelical Lutheran—both existing from early days but not extant today due to lack of interest or demolition/ reconstruction efforts over time

A number of businesses were founded here including J C Hargrave's grocery store which became one of Wichita's largest employers; L M McClure & Sons flour mills which became one of Topeka's largest fabricators; and Armour & Co.'s meatpacking plant which remains one of downtown Overland Park's largest employers today. The city also hosted several civil events during its history including the 1886 Turner-Williams Game Fair (now considered an annual event), World War I Victory Day parade on July 4, 1924, and the 1986 KC Chiefs football game against Kansas City Chiefs
Parsons, Kansas was founded in 1871 by James W. Parsons and his wife Emma. The town was named after James W. Parsons' father, John A. Parsons. The first school in the town was built in 1872, and the first store opened in 1875. In 1888, the town became a city and was renamed Parsons City.
