In 1927 the first oil well was drilled here and production began soon afterwards; it continued until 1938 when it stopped because of environmental concerns brought about by the Flint Hills Explosion that year near Wichita. In 1930 Parsons had its first high school graduate - Mrs Emma Dean from Topeka - and the town's only doctor Dr J C Whitehead who became an eminent figure hereabouts as he ran both local hospitals as well as one at Wichita State University until his death in 1978 aged 89 years old (becoming one of Hutchinson's most famous citizens).
