In addition to its importance as an economic center, Parsons has also been known for its traditional music and arts programs: both local bands (the Orchids) and larger groups such as The Bluegrass Boys toured through town frequently throughout the 1930s and 1940s; while also hosting extensively themed festivals each year such as Bluegrass Days or Jazz Festivals; most notably in 1951 when they held their annual Christmasfest fundraiser at Renaissance Casino & Resort across from downtown Wichita Falls; this event helped support local charities during what would be one of the worst years for farming in Kansas during that decade. Business boomed as people traveling to Dodge City or Topeka caught up with goods being transported eastward from Wichita and Emporia across the border into Colorado Territory. A two-story hotel built on Main Street served as a stop on the train line for passengers Trapani & Sons grocery store (now called Walmart), hardware store built by Elisha Wright (now demolished), barbershop (later renamed First National Barber Shop) operated by Jesse Whitehead, musical instrument shop operated by Wm Harkins (now demolished), Lizzie Borden's house (later used as a museum) and more than twenty businessesvirtually took off around town during this time period. By 1900, there were over 150 residents living in Parsons while employment totaled 1,500 jobsoric double what it was five years earlier
