Parsons, Kansas is a small town in east-central Kansas. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shawnee Hills, Kansas Micropolitan Statistical Area. Parsons was founded in 1867 by John Parsons and his family. The present day town was founded on the central square of what is now downtown Parsons. The white settlers who first arrived in this area were farmers who had to contend with harsh climate, poor soil, and Native American resistance to European settlement. After 1830, when Indian Removal began, many Wichita County pioneers also moved into eastern Hutchinson County (now northeast Wichita). In 1867 John Parsons donated land for a townsite on which he and his wife Palmyra built their log cabin home. They named the community Parsons after John's older brother Amos (Amos) Parsons who had settled in that area some years earlier. In 1870 two other families decided to move into this new community: The Herters from Topeka and Jenssen from Dodge City; both men were heavily interested in prospecting for oil resources near Wichita Falls, Texas. Jameson’s store became one of the first businesses in town and soon proved valuable due to its location close to water supplies and transportation connections needed for getting goods to market. The first school opened in 1871 as a one-room log building on Main Street; it served students from local farms as well as people living near town on Long Prairie Creek. In 1872 a frame school house was erected on First Avenue; it served grades 1 through 8 until 1955 when it was replaced by the current Administration Building which stands today on Second Avenue between Market Street and Elm Street."
