Afterward, Parsons joined Wilkinson's regiment and fought at Buena Vista and Monterrey. In 1847, John Parsons married Martha Jane Hutton and they moved to Wichita County, Kansas Territory. There he opened a store called The Post Office which soon became successful enough to move into larger quarters. The Parsonases were responsible for creating many great moments in Wichita history including becoming city fathers and helping create Wichita's first school district. They also built numerous homes in downtown Wichita and continue to live there today. John Parsons died from an illness at age 97 years old on October 28th, 1965.

Parsons, Kansas is a small town located in McPherson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,021 at the 2010 census. The Parsons post office was established in 1872. It discontinued operations in 1907. The first person to ever settle in Parsons was John Gentry and his wife Sarah Ketcham from Illinois on July 1, 1867. They came across the river to what is now Parsons when they were exploring the new land that had been acquired by the Kanawha River Company near today's Ripley and Wamego townships of McPherson County. Gentry purchased two hundred acres (120 ha) of this virgin land from James Browning for $500. He named the area "Parsons" after his friend and mentor, Andrew Carnegie. In 1870, local farmer William Hickey set up a school in Parsons using log buildings he built himself on a rise overlooking the river. By 1871 there were 10 students enrolled in Mr. Hickey's one-room schoolhouse! In 1875 an addition was made to the school with a large room used as storage until 1903 when it became home to the current heavy metalworking plant which still uses that same building today! During its early years there wasn't much development around Parsons because most of what was available for purchase or cultivation site didn't fit within agricultural boundaries - until finally someone did develop something - hardware store pioneer J C Jarrett who opened a store next door to Mr Hickey's school on May 24, 1896! Jarrett started selling hardware products such as nails and screws instead of farm produce which soon began becoming popular among locals because it could be eaten fresh or stored unopened! Gentry Elementary School stood until 1984 when it burned down due to arson!!! There have been many changes over time including several tornado events which destroyed various homes/buildings/roads northeast of town including: Overlook Road Baptist Church (1905), First National Bank Building (1907), High School (1910-present), Female College Academy & Business School (1920), Porterbrook Houses housing project (!=cancelled) and lastly Agricultural Hall Complexes since 1978!! Finally we come back to present day where most people still live close by with less than 8 miles between their house & grocery store!!!
