Parsons, Kansas was the birthplace of the modern shotgun. The first shotgun in Parsons was built in 1868 by a man named George Hill and became known as the Hill Rifle. It had a 12-gauge barrel and used a trapdoor magazine.
Parsons, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The townsite of Parsons was laid out in 1881 by George W. Parsons and named for him. Parsons built a gristmill in the town in 1885 and became an agricultural center with several hundred acres of land that he sold to farmers. The first school in Parsons was built on the corner of Main and Elm Streets in 1886. In 1903, the first post office was established in Parsons; it remained open until 1959. In 1905, George W. Parsons donated land to build a high school; it was completed in 1909 and named for him. The town had two general stores when it incorporation took place; one closed down around 1920 and the other reopened as KSHSD (Kansas State High School District) Store #1 within a year of its establishment. In 1927, Wichita-based oil Refining Company merged with Chicago-based Standard Oil Company to form Unocal Corporation; accordingly, KSHSD became Unocal's primary refinery affiliate within KSOC (Kansas State Oil Company). With this change came new competition from Unocal's affiliates located outside ofKSOC for production capacity at KSHSD; however, management continued to invest heavily into research and development at the plant until it went offline due to economic conditions during World War II. As part of global wartime rationing policies instituted by the United States government, all heavy oil products were put into suspension on February 16, 1945; as a result, no paper mill could operate because there was not enough raw material available to make paper products from crude oil product stocks typical at that time. Papermaking resumed after war restrictions ended but only marginally due to lack of market demand for recycled paper compared with investment required to rebuild mills following wars past. By 1957 total production at KSHSD had decreased 85% relative to pre-war levels while furnace use had increased 50%. All remaining heavy oil refining capacity within KSOC either shuttered or converted into munitions manufacturing due largely to availability bans placed onoil during peacetime which also drove up prices for refined fuel products.
